Patience Mthunzi is a senior scientist for the Biophotonics Research Group within the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) National Laser Center. Biophotonics is a field that enables microscopic study of biological molecules, cells and tissue using laser, within which Patience’s research interests include optical tweezing, stem cell research, and HIV research. Unable to study biophotonics in South Africa, she became the first South African PhD student at the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University of St Andrews in Scotland. She was recently awarded one of the country’s highest orders, the Order of Mapungubwe, for her contribution in the field.
